How time flies…10 days old

Grae’s first week has been unbelievable.  We already can’t remember a time that he wasn’t a part of our family, and yet at other times, we just look at each other in disbelief- it still hasn’t fully sunk in that this perfect angel is really OURS. FOREVER.   Grae’s mommy has officially entered the world of CRAZY— she frequently just stares at her baby and cries because he is growing up too fast.

Day 7 was especially hard.  I just want him to stay this size forever.  Each day he changes just a little bit more.  We took our first long road trip to Grandma and Granddad Gordy’s for Thanksgiving and he slept the entire way.

On day 8, he started becoming more alert- focusing his eyes on objects close to his face. He also had his first professional newborn photos taken.  He did a great job demonstrating his digestive system skills- we went through three of the photographer’s pretty white blankets in a matter of minutes, and he made a pretty surprise down the front of Daddy’s shirt when we took his diaper off to get a nude photo. Oops.

On day 9, his hair seemed to grow right before our eyes- and we are becoming more and more convinced that Mommy’s wish is coming true- he has his momma’s red hair. 🙂 Granddad and Uncle Cason have nicknamed him Ginger Midget… How rude!  (Grae- you can get them back when you get a little bigger!)

Day 10 was an especially big day- he lost his umbilical cord stump!  AND his bilirubin levels are finally in the normal range which means we don’t have to take him to the hospital anymore to have his blood drawn! YAY!! 🙂 He also has been “smiling” in his sleep all day… I know these gorgeous grins are not purposeful at this point- but they still melt my heart just the same.

Graeson is the happiest baby.  He doesn’t cry and he sleeps all the time.  Last night he only woke up one time at 4:30 am to eat and went directly back to sleep.  I can’t believe how lucky we are.  I didn’t know it was possible, but he gets cuter each time I look at him.  I am quickly discovering that the love for your child is different than anything else in the world.

❤ So incredibly blessed.

We have celebrated many “firsts” this week- here are the highlights:

First trip in an elevator

First time outside

First ride in a car

First time in his new house

First time at the grocery store

First bath

First nail clipping

First walk in a stroller

First trip to a restaurant

First time getting professional pictures taken

First trip to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s

First trip to the pediatrician

Once Upon A Time (Grae’s Bedtime Story)

Once upon a time, a little girl was born in a small town on the Great Plains.  Little did she know that her prince charming was living only a few miles down the road.  So close to one another, yet so far away. As she grew, she collected dreams and memories, knowing that one day, they would guide her to a place unlike any other- where the world and all its afflictions would suddenly disappear- leaving a small miracle in their place.

The little girl was provided with more love and kindness than many will ever know.  Throughout her life, her mother and father showed her the boundless compassion of a parent’s love.  She dreamed of one day passing this love on to a child of her own.

At the same time, just miles away, the boy was carving his own destiny. His days filled with lessons of love and discovery. He didn’t know it then, but he was learning to navigate the thousands of smaller roads that would eventually lead him into the arms of his true love.

One day, 21 years later and 1,126 miles from where her journey began, while pondering the complexities of physics, the girl and the boy met.  The boy, a traveler himself, offered her a friendly smile and directions to the nearest restroom.  Upon her return, the boy had vanished. Assuming that she would never see him again, the girl rejoined her friends, but could not forget the boy’s strangely familiar smile.  Some time later, the boy- eyes filled with the same familiar light- reappeared.  As if they had known each other in some other place and time, they got lost in conversation.  As they spoke, it became clear that their journeys were not those of strangers, but more of star-crossed companions.

A short time later, the young man, realizing what he had found, proposed that they never again travel alone and asked for her hand in marriage. The couple were joined under the magical branches of an ancient oak tree, with their families and greatest friends in attendance. The evening was truly enchanted and even the breeze seemed to carry the whispers of eternity.

As their love grew, the couple proudly walked together overcoming life’s challenges as if they were no match for the magic that had brought them together. Before long, they decided that it was time to pass the love they had found onto their own child. On a cool winter afternoon in February, the couple discovered that they would soon become a family of three. The next nine months would mark the transition from the life they had known to the miracle on the horizon. The days, weeks, and months passed, each quicker than the one before. Suddenly, on a cool, fall night, the wind began to blow, whistling through the tall pine trees that had been still just seconds before, the sky grew brighter as if the moon had been given a gift from the sleeping sun, and a beautiful baby boy was born.

Baby Grae’s 12 hour old photo shoot previews :)

We just got our previews back from the photographer from Grae’s 12 hour old photo shoot!  I can’t believe how much our little guy has changed in his first five days of life. Sometimes I swear I can see him change and grow before my eyes.  We fall even more in love with him with his every breath.

He. is. absolute. perfection.

My Life, My Soul, My Son

We are so proud to announce the birth of our baby boy,

Graeson Royce Mielke

12 hours old

Born at 10:29 pm on Tuesday, November 15, 2011

8 pounds 6 ounces

19 inches long

We have waited our whole lives for you, Beautiful Boy.  We love you more than words can say.

XOXO,

Mommy and Daddy

We can’t wait to share the incredible story of Grae’s birthday with you (and post more pictures of our little man than you care to see)!   However, we just got home from the hospital and are absolutely exhausted, so we will do this as soon as we get settled into our new routine as “semi” first time parents.

Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

We love you all!

Andrea and Ian

Half Way There!!

Holy buckets! We made it half way. Andrea is 5 cm dialated and received her epidural about 10 minutes ago. She has been amazing, not a single tear and she looks beautiful! Her contractions are still coming regularly and we have been working together to support her. I can’t even describe how amazing this experience has been thus far. Andrea has been talking about how blessed we are to have so much support from soo many people (even when she was having contractions!). We love you all so much. We are honored to have each of you with us right to the edge of this adventure. There are only a few hours left between now and forever.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers.

Ian

40 weeks, 2 days!

I cannot believe tomorrow night at 8:00pm, less than 24 hours from now, I will be in our birthing suite being induced!  I have so many mixed feelings- I am nervous, anxious, scared, and beyond excited!  I can’t stop thinking about our baby boy and how our life will never again be the same.

My baby bump hasn’t ever really been huge- even 4 days before my due date I had to convince another momma that I was not 4 months pregnant like she was, but instead that I was full term… UNTIL TODAY!! My STOMACH LOOKS LIKE IT IS GOING TO POP!!  I don’t know how it happened, but overnight, I swear Little Grae gained two pounds (Good lord, lets hope not!).

40 weeks, 2 days

Ian and I spent the day doing our last minute “chores” and just enjoying our last Sunday without a baby.  We slept in, making this the first time in weeks, possibly months, that I slept for 8+ hours.  Let me tell you, it was AMAZING.  We then did  a little yard work, raked leaves, finished cleaning our house and made tons of meals that we are going to stick in the freezer so we wont have to worry about cooking for a while.  It feels great to actually have accomplished everything I had on my never ending “To-Do Before Baby” list.  We even bathed our pups!

My Macaroni loves bath time 🙂

After a full day of chores, we decided that we would go to Scalini’s- the well known Atlanta restaurant famous for their eggplant parm that is supposed to put women into labor within 48 hours of eating it.  The eggplant was FANTASTIC, and the waiter told us stories about how women go into labor WHILE eating the meal AT THE RESTAURANT! Ahh! The restaurant has a fun little deal that if you go into labor within those 48 hours, you win a $25 gift certificate, a little baby outfit, and the baby’s picture on the wall full of other “Eggplant Babies.”  Little do they know I’m going to be cheating a bit since I will be getting induced tomorrow, but I’m still hopeful that he will come on his own tonight.  🙂

SCALINIS

Best eggplant ever 🙂

We finished the night with an ice cream outing for dessert. 🙂 I’d say it was a pretty darn good Sunday.  Now, bring on the baby!  🙂

XO

Grae’s DUE DATE

11-11-11… Grae’s AWESOME due date is two hours from being over and still no significant signs of labor.  We did have our 40 week PRE-OP appointment today since I will be getting induced on Monday!  The midwife performed another internal exam and found that my cervix is 70% effaced, really soft, and almost 2 cm dilated!  She said that my belly is measuring perfectly, but upon feeling him in there she pointed out that he is taking up the entire space, up and down and side to side, and estimated that he is a little over 8 pounds already!  AHhh!  She said my blood pressure is “beautiful” and I have actually lost 5 pounds since last week’s appointment (I have NO idea how that happened), which means that I will have gained 25 pounds during my pregnancy.  She then explained the induction procedure-which I’m not going to lie- sounded a little intimidating.  I’m going to have to build up my courage before Monday… that, or pray that the baby comes on his own this weekend.  If getting induced is the plan, we will go to the Women’s Center at 8:00 pm on Monday night and they will insert Cervidil which will help my cervix thin and soften the rest of the way- they call this “ripening.”  That insert stays in for 12 hours (although sometimes that in itself causes women to go into labor).  The midwife told me that because I have a posterior cervix, this could be a painful procedure (Scary).  After the twelve hours (8:00 am Tuesday), they will start the Pitocin, which will begin my contractions.  This could take anywhere from an hour to twelve or more hours before the baby is ready for birth.  I will have to be in active labor- which means 4 or more cm dilated- before they give me an epidural (More Scary).  Then, when I am having regular, strong contractions it will be time to push (SCARIEST).  Anyway- at some point on Tuesday, we should be holding our precious baby boy that we have waited our whole lives for.  We are getting so excited we can hardly stand it!

Hurry up, Grae Baby!

My baby is due TOMORROW!

“Life is all about timing..the unreachable becomes reachable, the unavailable becomes available, the unattainable…attainable.  Have the patience, wait it out.  It’s all about timing.”

~Stacy Charter

As anxious as I am to meet my little man, as much as I want to be able to convince my body to go into labor tomorrow on his due date, as much as I try to naturally induce labor in every way possible- even if it means GALLOPING AROUND THE HOUSE (are you getting a visual of how desperate I’m getting?)… I am reminded, once again, that life will unfold itself, as it should.  I cannot force it where I think it should go, despite my best effortsAnd so, I follow. I will allow myself to be swept up in life’s bigger plan and open myself to the true grace and blessings of the situation. Well, at the very least, I’m going to try my absolute best.  😉

We love you so much Grae and we know you are worth the wait!  (But, 11-11-11 is a really cool birthday—-just sayin’ ;))

Our very big, very little, absolutely wonderful surprise

Tonight, a precious baby boy was born two months premature.  His parents are two of our very best friends and when his Daddy called to tell us the news, he also dropped the information that he and his fiance have chosen Ian and I to be the baby’s Godparents!  Little Elijah David is 4 lbs 0 oz, and has been transferred to a NICU at a bigger hospital because his lungs are not fully developed, however they have already been able to turn his oxygen down!  He is a fighter.  Ian made it clear to John (Elijah’s Daddy) that even though Elijah was born first, that does not make him older than Grae. 😉 The competitions are starting already and Grae isn’t even here yet. 🙂 I know they will be best friends for life just like their parents. 🙂 Please keep John, Nicole and Baby Elijah in your prayers.  We love you Elijah and cannot wait to meet you!  I’ll post a picture as soon as I get one.

3 more days until Grae’s due date!

This post is about absolutely nothing.  Kind of like what is happening in my head. My brain is going a million miles a minute, yet I don’t think I’ve had a coherent thought all day.  I’ve heard people joke about pregnancy forgetfulness, but never thought it to be true.  Well, I left my credit card at a restaurant yesterday and didn’t realize it until today.  When I went to jump in the car to go pick it up, I couldn’t find my keys anywhere.  I searched the house for an hour and finally gave up.  A little while later, I went to the fridge to get some juice… and there my keys were, sitting right next to the milk on the top shelf of the refrigerator.  I have absolutely no recollection of putting them in there (or even unclipping them from my purse for that matter!).  So… I’ve decided it was probably best not to venture out too far from home by myself today.  Thankfully, my helpful hubby picked up my credit card. 🙂 I’m so glad that I began my maternity leave the week before the baby comes.  It has been wonderful to just lay around and get a little rest and time to myself- even though it is obviously not helping me focus. 🙂 (Plus, God knows what I would have forgotten about at work!)

P.S. That baby boy of ours is getting bigger and bigger each day, and SO IS MY STOMACH!  I’m just amazed at how my bump changes each day- bigger, lower, harder, even the shape changes!  🙂

39 1/2 week baby bump 🙂
